Saint Patrick's Day, also known as the Feast of St. Patrick, is an annual celebration on March 17th in honor of the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday is celebrated worldwide by people who identify as Irish or have Irish heritage, as well as those who simply enjoy the festivities. Since its inception in 1903, Saint Patrick's Day has been celebrated with parades, religious services and parties. The colors green and gold are used to represent Ireland and wreaths made from shamrocks—a symbol of luck—are hung around homes and businesses.

St. Patrick's Day has become a popular holiday for people to send flowers to friends and loved ones. Flowers are often given as gifts or placed on graves on this day because they are seen as symbols of love and affection. Saint Patrick was born in England around 390 AD. He was kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave where he worked as a shepherd for six years before escaping back to England. After returning to Ireland on a mission from God, he converted most of the island's population from paganism to Christianity through his missionary work. The date of Saint Patrick's Day was chosen because it falls during Lent when Christians are expected not to eat meat or eggs. The custom of wearing green clothing on St. Patrick's Day originated because Saint Patrick used the shamrock as an example of how God created everything out of one thing (in this case, three leaves). This plant symbolizes new life (spring), which is why it is often given as a gift on St Saint Patrick's Day.
